As humans, we are wired to love good stories. They draw us in and keep our attention. Our kids are no different! With the wide range of available picture books, we should be intentional about including them in math class.

If you’re not sure how to weave picture books into your math lessons, you will be amazed at the variety of ways they can be used. (1.5 Hours of PD)

In this course, you will learn:

  • Why incorporating good books is so beneficial for students
  • Different categories of picture books and when to use each category
  • How to use books to teach and explore math vocabulary
  • How to strengthen math comprehension by making connections, making predictions, asking questions and synthesizing information

In addition to the video content, this course also includes classroom posters & simple printable pages so that you can begin implementing what you learn right away.

Printable resources include:

  • Math Vocabulary Notebook (for any math unit)
  • Inference/Evidence Charts
  • Making Connections Graphic Organizers
  • Asking Good Questions Classroom Poster
  • Notice & Wonder Pages to accompany your picture books

Current brain research has revealed that our brains require visuals to learn and comprehend math for the long term. But what does that mean for our teaching and how can we be intentional about using and incorporating more visuals into our lessons?

While making math visual might be something you already try to do, you will be encouraged as you learn how our brains work, as well as new strategies for helping kids to visualize the math they’re learning. (1.5 Hours of PD)

In this course, you will learn:

  • Why visual math is essential based on current brain research
  • How to use simple tools to strengthen different parts of the brain
  • How to make math visual with patterns and graphic organizers
  • Hands-on tools to visually explore all kinds of math concepts

Again, along with the video content, you will receive helpful printables and visual math lessons so that you can begin incorporating them into your lessons right away.

Printable resources include:

  • Visual Dot Cards for whole class discussions (and how to use them)
  • Graphic Organizers for a variety of math concepts
  • Visualize, Draw, Share Activity Page
  • Visual Math Lessons for exploring fractals & patterns

When it comes to word problems, all too often kids rely on key words or simply pluck all the numbers out and add them together. If you want to strengthen your kids’ number sense and help them to make sense of word problems, this course will help. In addition, you will learn how to open up problems to create higher order thinking challenges.

Not only will this course give you practical strategies to help kids make sense of word problems, you will also deepen your own understanding as you explore the different structures of types of word problems.

By better understanding problem structure yourself, you will be better equipped to help your students. (1.5 Hours of PD)

In this course, you will learn:

  • The problem with only relying on key words to solve a word problem
  • Different problem types and structures for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
  • Meaningful strategies you can use to help kids actually understand the situation of the problem
  • Ways to open up word problems to create higher order thinking challenges and open ended problems
  • What 3-ACT tasks are and how to incorporate these tasks into your lessons

To equip you to tackle word problems with confidence, this course also includes ready-to-use word problem sets (with every structure type) and simple games that your kids will love.

Printable resources include:

  • 6 sets of addition & subtraction word problems (whole numbers, fractions & decimals) - PRINT + DIGITAL FORMAT
  • 5 sets of multiplication & division word problems (whole numbers, fractions & decimals) - PRINT + DIGITAL FORMAT
  • Word problem solving templates (to help students organize their thinking)
  • Graphic Organizers
  • Wacky Word Problems Board Game
  • Math Libs: Story Problem Challenges
  • 3 ACT Tasks Recording Pages

How often are your kids actually doing the hard work of wrestling with a concept and applying what they know to solve meaningful problems? Research has shown that kids learn math best by doing. This course will help you to learn how to structure your lessons so that kids can learn and discover math concepts in the context of meaningful problems.

If the thought of coming up with inquiry-based lessons is overwhelming, fear not. In this course I will walk you through how easy and low-prep it can be! (3.5 Hours of PD)

In this course, you will learn:

  • Why teaching math through problem solving is beneficial to students
  • The difference between teaching for problem solving, about problem solving and through problem solving
  • What this actually looks like and how to plan out lessons
  • How to choose meaningful and appropriate problems or tasks for your kids
  • Dozens of specific examples that you can use or adapt to meet the needs of your students (K-2, 3-5, and 6-8 examples are included)

Along with the video content, this course also includes planning pages and done-for-you inquiry challenges so that you can try out problem based math in your own classroom right away.

Printable resources include:

  • Planning pages to help you think through your lesson plans and how you will guide the discussion
  • Task evaluation checklist to help you choose the right tasks
  • 2 ‘Which One Doesn’t Belong?’ Task Sets
  • 3 levels of pattern block challenges to help kids learn to compose shapes
  • Building Shapes pattern block challenges in 2 levels

  • Missing Number Puzzle challenges - PRINT + DIGITAL
  • Visual dot cards to encourage number sense in grades K-2

Whether or not you are currently familiar with number talks, you will be excited to learn how they can transform students’ understanding. Rather than you telling kids how to solve a problem, they will be telling you their unique strategies and discussing ideas together. And the earlier kids begin with number talks, the more familiar they’ll be as they progress through school, which is why I include a video especially for K-2 teachers.

Learn not only the "why" of number talks, but also the "how" in this easy-to-digest course. You’ll be amazed at how your students’ understanding of math operations increases over time. (1.5 Hours of PD)

In this course, you will learn:

  • What number talks are and why they matter
  • How to get started with number talks
  • Basic addition and subtraction strategies
  • Basic multiplication and division strategies
  • Specific ways number talks can be used in the early grades (they look a bit different in grades K-2)

Plus, in addition to the video content, this course also includes planning pages, classroom posters & more so that you can begin incorporating number talks into your daily routine right away.

Printable resources include:

  • Classroom posters on the benefits & guidelines for number talks
  • Classroom poster with “conversation starters”
  • Quick reference pages with the most common mental math strategies
  • Number talk planning pages (in color & black and white)
  • Visual number talk starters for use in grades K-2

This course builds on the work students do in number talks as they learn how to put their thoughts, questions and more into writing. Research shows that writing out notes improves learning and conceptual understanding. So if our goal is for students to understand math deeply, and to retain what they learn and communicate their ideas effectively with others, we must include some form of written responses.

Whether writing is a normal part of your math routine or you have no idea where to start, you will find tons of easy to implement and meaningful ideas. (2 Hours of PD)

In this course, you will learn:

  • Why writing in math class should be an essential part of instruction
  • How to cultivate a classroom culture where writing about your thinking is the norm
  • How to encourage kids to write to explain and justify their thinking and explore big ideas
  • How to encourage kids to reflect on their learning
  • Fun and engaging ways to incorporate creative writing into math class

And to be sure you are set up for success, this course also includes classroom posters and ready-to-use writing prompts so that you can easily include meaningful writing in your math lessons.

  • ‘Fit the Facts’ writing challenges (to justify their thinking)
  • ‘The Day the ___ Quit’ creative writing prompt
  • Error Analysis Templates Bundle (teaching tips, classroom posters and printable pages for students of all ages)

“Bethany is full of math knowledge and enthusiasm, but she’s able to communicate clearly and creatively, breaking down ideas into meaningful chunks and supporting the information with examples and even research. I’ve found the classes to be engaging and rich with information, but not too long or overwhelming. Bethany’s love for math is evident both through the courses she offers and also the printables she creates to share that love with our students.”

-Lynna, HSWOTrainingWheels.com

I know you want to engage and challenge every child in your class, but with so many different ability levels and individual needs, it’s easier said than done.

Still Have Questions?

Are these courses for teachers or parents?

These courses are designed with classroom teachers in mind. That being said, the materials are mostly focused on math teaching strategies that anyone who teaches math will benefit from, including homeschool families. The only exception may be the “Number Talks” course, which assumes a small group of students in order to have regular number talks. Parents who do not teach in some capacity or who homeschool may not benefit from this course.

How do I access the materials?

After signing up, you will be given immediate access to the course dashboard. Simply click on any of the courses to begin. You can then login again at anytime to access the materials. You will also receive a set of follow up emails explaining how to access and navigate the site.

Can I request a refund if I don't like it?

Yes. While I will be sad to see you go, I want you to be completely satisfied and confident in your purchase. If for some reason it does not meet your expectations, simply request a refund within 14 days of purchasing.

I don't live in the U.S. Can I still sign up?

You sure can. Simply check out with PayPal, and you’re all set.

What grades are the courses for?

The strategies taught are highly adaptable, and I tried to include lots of examples to span grades K-8. If you teach preschool, these courses will likely focus on math skills too advanced for your kiddos. If you teach high school, feel free to email me: bethany(at)mathgeekmama(dot)com to ask about your particular class/grade if you are interested in one of the courses.

What type of teacher are these courses designed for?

Quick answer: a teacher with any experience!

But, here's how they'll specifically help you no matter where you are in your teaching journey:

  • Are you a new teacher? You will love the wealth of information and printables available at your fingertips! The content taught in this course will give you an overview of how our brains learn math plus easy to implement strategies to really strengthen your students’ understanding (and boost your confidence). You may even learn methods of solving math problems that you weren’t taught in school.
  • Are you an experienced teacher? You will love digging deeper into different visuals and models to really approach math problems multiple ways so that you can pass that on to your students. Plus, you will learn about current brain research and hopefully pick up new ideas and strategies that you haven’t tried before.
  • Are you a tutor, coach, or interventionist? You likely work with a large age range of students, each with unique struggles and needs. The strategies and ideas you learn in this course will give you additional tools and visuals to engage and stretch each student that you work with, meeting them where they are.
  • Do you homeschool? Put aside the fear of homeschooling math! In these courses you will learn to better understand math yourself, as well as strategies to better help your kids understand (and understand deeply).

RISK-FREE PURCHASE!

If you are not 100% satisfied with the course content and printable materials, simply email us within 14 days for a full refund. I want this to be a purchase that benefits you for years to come. If it’s not what you’re looking for, I’ll refund you.
